The recent Grant Thorton International Business Report (IBR) revealed that Malaysia has the highest number of women in the workforce with 40% compared with other Asean countries.
Though the figures are promising, only 26% of them occupy senior roles. There are many reasons why women choose to not take the next step in career advancements. A study done at the University of Georgia and Columbia University has found that women are better learners. Apparently, women have a better approach to expanding our minds. The research also found that women tend to be more attentive, flexible, and organised. With that said, women have the upper hand as these skills are transferable to the workplace and tasks.
So, the question is how we can continue to get ahead in the corporate world at a desirable pace:
No Substitute to Hard and Honest Work
There are no shortcuts to the way up the corporate ladder – doing excellent work is an expected baseline. Failing to deliver outstanding results only means that you would not attract the attention of superiors who are responsible to catapult your career forward. Be aware that no amount of hard work can substitute the importance of being straight-up with superiors, be sure to let superiors know as soon as you become aware of a problem or potential problem, and offer possible solutions. This direct approach will show your sound judgement in handling stressful situations and your ability to problem solve.
Be Aware of Your Attitude
As simple as it may sound, a good attitude is arguably one of the most important things you can bring with you to the job. If you are open minded and willing to work with others well, you may find that others will want to work with you too. Every superior seeks a talented employee with the right attitude, one that is proactive, ready to step in when asked to and willing to support other team members to success.
Volunteer for Assignments
There is always an opportunity to learn something new from a task that is either seemingly tough or challenging. Just because no one wants to step up for the task does not mean that it has a negative connotation. On the contrary, volunteering for a challenging assignment only means there is a chance that you may get noticed by senior management for your courage and determination. It’s time to request for either stretch assignments or a challenging portfolio; it will help enhance your growth. Specifically look for assignments that help you expand your skills. By showcasing your natural talents, you’ll give people a chance to see another side of you, and you may open doors to new opportunities you’ve never even considered.
If there are no visible projects in the near future, be sure to let your superior know of your interests.
Find Yourself a Mentor
Do not assume that your years of experience and skill are enough to get you ahead. It’s important to have a support system with an objective perspective to guide your journey. Mentors are important for giving you guidance on your career.
More often than not, we believe we know best for ourselves. However, sometimes we’re not our best advisors. With the right mentor. you may find yourself driving your career at a different pace or direction. It’s amazing how one develops when guided by someone we respect and who is profoundly more experienced.
Be Clear with What You Want
Being clear about your goals is paramount. Successful women who get to the top understand that no one else can do it for them but themselves. Goals form a starting point; the journey is clear and has more meaning with it.
Once you are clear with your goals and what you want, be sure to meet and speak to your superior. State your interests and get some advice on how you can prepare to get there. Remember that it’s important that your goals and desires should indicate your ability to contribute to the organisation in a broader way. Be ready to take feedback and channel your efforts in undertaking whatever necessary to get to where you want. Success comes with desire and unwavering resilience.
Build A Strong Network
Many women make the error of seeking sponsorship from only superiors. Some of the people you work with may at some point be your superior or client and could help you rise in the ranks. Collaborations at all levels are impactful for your career advancement.
The more network support you have, the higher your chances of getting ahead. The age-old saying, “No man is an island” is the best way to describe that partnerships and network support is no longer a choice in this day and age.
Look The Part
Women are lucky – we’ve been blessed with choices on clothing and beauty products. If anyone has half the chance of looking good is women. So why not take the time an utilise the choices women have to look sharp and presentable.
Women should start dressing for success way before they get there! A presentable appearance does make the difference when dealing with customers and partners. Once you dress the part, acting the part would be seemingly easier. After all, it is proven that confidence is boosted when women feel good. Imagine the impact it can create to both clients and superiors when women take the effort to dress for success.
When The Door Closes, Look For The Window
There will be times that all your efforts do not lead you towards your aspiration within the organisation. it could be for so many reasons: you may have outstretched yourself, performed brilliantly and made the effort to do all that we talked about. No matter what, know that everything we do in the course of careers will always add to our experiences. So, never feel that it is a waste of your time.
Remember you can fast-track your career anytime when you feel you’ve hit a wall, the only difference is that it may be with another organisation or superior. Don’t ever give up on your dreams and continue to pave your professional journey towards your ultimate destination.
